The Upper Ottawa River between the town of Temiskaming Quebec and Deep River Ontario is an untouched paddling route that can be paddled in its 190km entirety or broken up into any number of shorter trips.
The Upper Ottawa is rich in history with its fur trade and logging past. Visits to historic sites and hiking trails are numerous allowing you to stretch this trip if time allows. Modest currents and relative protection from the wind allows experienced paddlers to easily cover 40km in a day.
Aside from Driftwood Provincial Park, there are no maintained campsites along the route but plenty of crown land sites can be found along its rocky shoreline or in sandy bays.
Temiskaming, QC to Mattawa, ON (2-3 days)
The 58km stretch from the Town of Temiskaming to the Town of Mattawa features impressive cliff shorelines and is the most remote stretch of the Upper Ottawa. Paddlers will only encounter the odd hunt camp or cottage. This section can be paddled in 2 or 3 days depending on your pace with a popular campsite located at the mouth of the Jocko River (ON).
5km upstream of the La Cave Dam you will find Bangs Bay on the Ontario side. At the inner most reaches of the bay you will find a trail to Nature's Harmony Ecolodge, with cabins a short hike from the rivers edge.
The La Cave dam 10km upstream of Mattawa has a well signed portage on the Ontario side along a paved and gravel road.
The historic Town of Mattawa has all the amenities you could want within walking distance of its staffed marina where kayaks can be securely left. Straight across the river is a steep hiking trail to the Mattawa Three Crosses, providing exceptional views of the town and surrounding area. Waterfront accommodations include Mattawa Adventure Camp and Valois Motel.
Vehicles can be left both in Temiskaming and Mattawa, with shuttle services offered by Algonquin North Outfitters .
